Just as a butterfly must go through stages of growth in order to become a beautiful creature, so must we all in order to fulfill a dream. Mariposa is a lifelong dream of an ordinary individual who learned how to grow a garden, build with cob, raise chickens and fish, and more because the idea of living a self-sustaining life was so compelling. The dream is still in its larval stage—and growing daily. What I hope to do is inspire others to take the first steps, however small, toward self-sufficiency—no matter where you are starting in the learning process. Mariposa serves as a place to experiment with and demonstrate different facets of achieving sustainability. The main question I struggle with daily is: “How can we make sure that a sustainable lifestyle is accessible to everyone, in their own homes, urban or rural, at any income level?” |
